An inaugural release of 2,800 bottles, the Rainoldi 2013 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Vigna degli Apostoli is a new cru from this well-known vineyard, sitting at about 300 meters above sea level along the terraced, sandy and rocky banks of the Adda River. Although this is the first vintage made, the vines were planted in the 1950s. This lean-bodied expression of Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) greets the nose with elegant tertiary aromas that are deftly woven between some of the dark, crisp berry fruit that distinguishes the bouquet. There is dried cherry and crème de cassis with tarry notes of spice, smoke and crushed stone. The wine proceeds with a compact approach capped by fresh acidity and softly polished tannins. This wine is drinking beautifully in the here and now.
