Here is the anticipated latest release of Tommasi's premium, high-end wine: the 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva De Buris. This wine is crafted to be held to the highest standards, celebrating the family's long tradition of winemaking. The grapes are sourced from a 2.4-hectare parcel in La Groletta, where the calcareous clay soils, medium texture, and abundant rocks contribute to its character.
The blend consists of 65% Corvina, 22% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, and 8% Oseleta. After five slow years of aging in Slavonian oak, only 8,392 bottles were produced. The wine exudes deep intensity, gradually revealing a bouquet of dark fruits, spice, leather, and earthy notes. It offers an elegant mouthfeel, with bright acidity and finely polished tannins—qualities that come only with time. Despite its age, the core fruit remains remarkably well-preserved, giving the wine a youthful vibrancy.
Among the three vintages released so far (2008, 2009, and 2010), this 2010 stands as the most exceptional.
The quest is for fresher and drier here, as with many contemporary producers. Kirsch, leather, pine and a waft of dried mushroom to tatami straw. This has a mid-weighted feel and is refreshingly savory, yet without, perhaps, the density, sap and prerequisite freshness of top examples. Some oseleta here, serving as a bulwark against the encroaching heat. I'd like to see this in a few more years when my score may come up a notch. Drink or hold.
Licorice root, clove, terracotta, sage, mint and pithy maraschino cherry, with a curb of herbal tannins bracing the long, warming finish. Impressive expansion and length to this highly regional, full-weighted expression. Very good Ripasso. Drink or hold.
No appassimento. A straightforward, mid-weighted wine dominated by musty oak tannins that dry the finish. Time may do this favors. Bitter cherry, amaro and mint. Drink now.
Straight Trebbiano. Mid-weighted. Ester aromas, suggestive of cool fermentation temperatures: stone fruits, banana peel and quince paste. Finishes bright, fresh and easy, with a phenolic bite.
Producer Notes:
A deep ruby red in color, on the nose it offers intense scents of ripe cherries and plums, which give way to lightly floral and ethereal aromas. On the palate it is full-bodied and well-structured. The soft tannins enhance the richness of the fruit, which is nicely balanced by the tangy and persistent finish.
French barriques are used for the single vineyards here, but only for the maximum of one year, 'to fix the colour'. Thereafter, there is a transition to Slavonian oak to complete the mandatory four years. Yet one cannot escape the cinnamon-cedar-nutmeg tannin profile of the barriques. Lovely material behind. Sweet cherry, mint, amaro and sassafras, amidst a swirl of glycerol that coats the mouth. The drive is long, firm and powerful, without extraneous sweetness or obvious excess. A style that defines the philosophy here. A very good wine.
